As reported by
PC World, "
Microsoft Windows Mobile 7, which is made for chips used in mobile phones, will be more laptop friendly than older versions of Windows Mobile, said Luis Pineda, senior vice president at Qualcomm, on the sidelines of a news conference in Taipei."
This news contrasts with
our previous thoughts on Windows 7's Ultra Mobile PC operating system potentially replacing Windows Mobile Professional. Now it sounds more like Windows Mobile 7 will be replacing or overlapping with the Windows 7 UMPC operating system.
We've already seen plenty of UMPC sized devices running Windows Mobile (
HTC Advantage for example), so it's not much of a stretch to see the next version of Windows Mobile adding more support and functionality in these devices. The user interface may have to change a bit in order to give you more data access on the larger screens, as well as easy keyboard access for navigating commands.
My guess is that the
leaked Windows Mobile 7 screenshots, were only for the Smartphone/Standard version of the operating system. Here's to hoping that the next version of the more-powerful Windows Mobile Professional edition will offer better usability and more features for the keyboard-enabled smartphones and ultra-mobile PCs.

This may be a little off topic, but I just wanted to post a message about some of our friends in cyber-space. Sites like
PocketPCThoughts,
MobilitySite.com and even my favourite comedy site -
b3ta.com have been pulled off line following an explosion and fire at
ThePlanet which has destroyed part of the building. It appears that, although no servers were damaged, the explosion in the electrical equipment room caused walls to move several feet from their original position. This is affecting around 9000 servers, so you may find quite a few other sites off-line today.
Whilst I'm here, the HTC Touch Diamond videos should be online later today. Apologies for the delay!

The soon to be released Verizon i770 is reported on
Engadget Mobile. From the looks of things, it is a candybar QWERTY that runs on a touchscreen Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional platform, much like the European release of the
Samsung i780 but without the trackpad. Instead, Verizon's iteration will come with a traditional directional pad. The i770 is like the
Palm Treo 800w mixed with a little Samsung BlackJack/Samsung i780.
The device will feature GSM for global roaming, although it will operate on CDMA/EVDO for US operations. Along with Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and 256/128 RAM/ROM, this will be a great addition to Verizon's smartphone lineup.
The device is said to be launching in the third quarter.

The highly anticipated
HTC Diamond is getting shipped. In fact, over 10,000 units have shipped according to a report from DigiTimes, which has been featured on
SlashPhone.
The first 10,000 units were delivered to Hong Kong. Shipments to Europe will continue through June.
Unfortunately, because of the tri-band GSM support of the phone, US customers should not expect the phone stateside. Perhaps a quad-band GSM phone or tri-band phone with US frequencies will be released in the future.
An unboxing of the phone could be found on
SlashPhone if you're interested.

Wondering why our sites were down for most of the weekend? Just when I thought our significant down-time days were behind us, something crazy happens:
"An explosion Saturday evening at a Texas-based, privately held server hosting provider has caused server outages effecting 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. According to The Planet's website, at about 5 p.m. Saturday electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding their electrical equipment room. No injuries were reported and no servers were damaged or lost. The Houston company, which provides servers for small and medium sized companies, said it has its entire support team working around the clock to get the servers back on line. They estimate they will be up and running by Sunday afternoon."I spent most of my weekend
checking this forum thread hourly, trying to determine when my server would be brought back online. It didn't happen Sunday afternoon - late Sunday night everything was still down, but this morning when I woke up I was happy to see things were loading again. Big thanks to our server admin volunteer
Jorj Bauer for keeping a close watch on all of this and getting us back to live status while I was just waking up (and to Janak, Darius, and Jon for their help). Back to our regularly scheduled programming...
